C FRAME POWER PRESS
A C frame power press is a mechanical press built on an open-front, gap-shaped frame that leaves three sides of the die clear. Birson Forgings has manufactured C frame presses in Ludhiana since 1985 in capacities from 30 to 300 tonnes, in mechanical and pneumatic configurations, for blanking, piercing, stamping, bending and trimming work in sheet metal plants across India and export markets.

What a C-frame press is built for
The C frame earns its place on the shop floor through access. Three sides of the die are open — front, left and right — so strip stock feeds straight through, scrap drops clear, and an operator or robot reaches the die without working around a column. On short-run work where dies change several times a shift, that access is the difference between a press that runs and a press that waits.
It also costs less per tonne and takes less floor space than the equivalent H frame. For centred loads up to around 100 tonnes — blanking, piercing, simple forming, clinching — those are the numbers that decide the purchase.
The trade-off is deflection. An open frame springs slightly under load, and that spring grows with tonnage and with load placed off the centre of the bolster. It is predictable and designed for, and at ordinary tonnages it changes nothing you can measure in the part. Push into deep drawing, wide multi-station dies, or heavy off-centre work, and the H frame is the right machine instead.

Every machine is built to order. Bed size, stroke and shut height are matched to your die — send the die dimensions and we size the press around them.

Short version: centred loads, frequent die changes and strip feeding point to a C-frame. Deep drawing, wide multi-station dies and heavy off-centre loads point to an H-frame. If you are between the two, send the part drawing and we will tell you which machine we would build for it.

Why buy from Birson
-
We have built presses in Ludhiana for 40 years, and we build them from the frame up in our own plant — fabrication, machining, heat treatment and assembly under one roof. Three practical consequences for you: the specification you are quoted is the specification that gets built, the delivery date is ours to control rather than a supplier's, and spare parts stay available for the life of the machine. We still supply gears for presses we shipped twenty years ago.
-
Every machine is load-tested, checked for ram parallelism and trial-run before dispatch. Installation and operator training are included. Export machines ship with foundation drawings, electrical schematics, a spare parts list and a commissioning plan.

FAQs
-
What is a C frame power press used for? Blanking, piercing, stamping, bending, trimming and clinching of sheet metal. The open front leaves three sides of the die clear, which suits strip feeding, quick die changes and short production runs.
-
What is the difference between a C frame and an H frame power press? The frame shape, and what it does under load. A C frame is open at the front, so dies are easy to reach and change, and it deflects slightly under heavy or off-centre load. An H frame carries load down two columns on both sides of the ram, which keeps the ram parallel to the bolster in deep drawing and off-centre work.
-
Is a C type power press the same as an open front press? Yes. C type, C frame, gap frame and open front all describe the same machine — a press whose frame is open on three sides.
-
Should I take the mechanical or the pneumatic clutch? A pedal-operated rolling key clutch is standard and is fine for straightforward single-operation work. Take the pneumatic clutch and brake if you switch between inch, single-stroke and continuous running, want faster stopping, or need the press to hold a consistent stop position for automation.
-
What is the price of a 50 ton C frame power press in India? Price varies with bed size, stroke, motor rating, clutch type and safety specification. Send those four parameters and we will quote a firm price within 24 hours.
