Friction Screw Press Maintenance: How to Extend Machine Life

One reason shops love friction screw presses is how little maintenance they need, the design is mechanically simple, with no complex clutch to service. But low maintenance isn't no maintenance. A few routine checks keep the machine accurate and add years to its life. Here's a practical routine.
Daily: quick visual and function checks
Listen and look for unusual noise, vibration, or play.
Confirm the emergency stop and safety guards work.
Check for oil leaks and proper lubrication.
Clear scale and debris from the bed and tooling area.
The friction belt: the key wear part
The leather friction belt is the heart of a friction-drive press, and the part that wears. The good news: it's inexpensive and easy to replace. Inspect it regularly for glazing, fraying, or thinning, and change it before it slips. A worn belt means inconsistent blow energy and poor forgings.
The screw and nut: keep them lubricated
The alloy-steel screw and bronze nut are precision components. Follow the recommended lubrication schedule and grade. Watch for excessive backlash or play in the nut over time, it's a sign of wear that affects accuracy.
The brake and stroke control
Check brake function and adjustment so the ram stops cleanly and the stroke stays consistent. A drifting brake affects both safety and forging accuracy.
Alignment and fasteners
Periodically check ram-to-table alignment and re-torque key structural fasteners. Repeated heavy blows can loosen things over time; catching it early protects your dies.
Keep records and genuine spares
Log inspections and part changes. When you do replace a part, use genuine spares matched to your machine, a cheap substitute belt or nut can cost far more in rejects and downtime.
A simple maintenance rhythm
Frequency — Task
Daily — Visual, safety and lubrication check
Weekly — Inspect friction belt; clear debris
Monthly — Check nut backlash, brake, alignment
Periodic — Re-torque fasteners; replace worn belt
