Importing Forging Machinery from India: A Buyer's Checklist

India is one of the world's most competitive sources for power presses and forging machinery, strong engineering, fair pricing, and growing export experience. But a heavy machine crossing borders has more moving parts than a local purchase. Use this checklist to import with confidence.

1. Verify certification and standards

Start with the basics: is the manufacturer ISO 9001 certified? Does the machine meet the safety and electrical standards required in your country? Confirm voltage and frequency compatibility (e.g. 220V/440V, 50/60 Hz) before anything ships.

2. Confirm the technical specification in writing

Get tonnage, stroke, bed size, motor rating, and weight documented and agreed. A clear spec sheet prevents disputes and ensures the machine fits your floor and your job.

3. Agree Incoterms and shipping clearly

Know exactly who is responsible for what. Common terms include FOB (you arrange main shipping) and CIF (the seller covers cost, insurance, and freight to your port). Get it in writing.

4. Insist on seaworthy packaging

Heavy machinery needs proper export packing, anti-rust treatment, secure crating, and bracing for ocean transit. Ask how the machine will be protected and lashed.

5. Sort payment terms safely

A Letter of Credit (LC) protects both sides for large orders. Clarify advance percentage, balance terms, and currency up front.

6. Plan installation and commissioning

Ask: does the supplier provide installation guidance, remote support, or an engineer visit? Who commissions the machine and trains your operators? Clarify before you order.

7. Confirm spares and after-sales support

This is where many import deals fall down. Confirm genuine spare-part availability, lead times, and warranty terms. A wear part like a screw press belt should be easy to source for years.

8. Check documentation for customs

You'll need a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and any inspection or compliance certificates your customs authority requires. A supplier experienced in exports will prepare these smoothly.
