Power Press Safety: The 5-Layer Hierarchy Every Press Shop Needs

After an incident, the common response is more operator training — and nothing structural changes. Training is the last layer of press safety, not the first.

The Hierarchy

Layer one: eliminate exposure with coil feeders, magazine feeds, or automation, so hands never enter the die area. Layer two: engineering controls — fixed barrier guards, interlocked gates, and light curtains sized to actual stopping time. Layer three: reliable machine design — a pneumatic clutch that cannot repeat strokes, dual palm buttons with anti-tie-down, and a functioning single-stroke mode. Layer four: administrative controls — die-setting lockout procedures, supervision, and shift-change checks. Layer five: training — because a trained operator on an unguarded worn press is still one distraction from serious injury.

The Cheapest Big Win
