Cross Shaft Power Press: Built for Wide Dies and Long Parts

The Design Difference

With the crankshaft running left to right, a cross shaft press allows a wider bed and balanced ram loading across the full die area. A standard front-to-back shaft concentrates load delivery over a narrower span — put a wide five-station progressive die under it and the outer stations see a slightly tipped ram, uneven cutting clearance, and mystery burrs on stations one and five.

Applications

Progressive die stamping with four or more stations, long channel and angle components, shutter profiles and rolling-shutter parts, and multi-cavity blanking for small parts at volume.

When to Specify Cross Shaft

If your die is wider than it is deep, or you run coil-fed multi-station tooling, cross shaft geometry usually wins on part accuracy and die life at the same tonnage.

f your die is narrow and your cycle depends on changeover speed, a C-frame power press is the cheaper and better answer — three open sides beat everything for access.

If your tonnage requirement is above 250 T or your part is deep-drawn and heavy, an H-frame power press is the right frame.

The cross shaft press earns its place in the middle: wide tooling, long parts, sustained production, tight tolerance across the whole die width.

Five jobs where a cross shaft press pays for itself

  1. Progressive dies with five or more stations. Strip runs left to right; the wide bolster supports every station equally.

  2. Long automotive brackets, rails and channel sections. Off-centre load along the slide length — the double crank case exactly.

  3. Electrical laminations and wide sheet blanking. High SPM on wide strip without slide tipping.

  4. Transfer tooling for multi-operation parts. Space across the bed for the transfer bar and station spacing.

  5. Agricultural and bicycle components run in volume. Sustained production where die life, not cycle time, sets your cost per piece.

How to size a cross shaft press for your part

Four numbers decide the machine.

1. Tonnage. For blanking and piercing: Tonnage = (cut perimeter mm × thickness mm × shear strength kg/mm²) ÷ 1000 Then add at least 30% headroom. Our press tonnage calculator runs this for you and matches the result to a machine type.

2. Bed size. Die footprint plus clearance on all four sides — not the die dimension alone. Understating this is the most expensive mistake on the list, because it cannot be fixed later.

3. Shut height and stroke. Shut height must accommodate your tallest die; stroke must clear the finished part on the up-stroke. For drawn parts, stroke usually governs.

4. SPM. Match to your feed and your part. Higher is not better — over-speeding a draw operation tears material and kills die life.

Then check the fifth thing most buyers miss: off-centre load. If the working load does not sit near the slide centre, tell us where it does sit. That single detail is what decides straight side versus double crank, and it is why two presses of identical tonnage can behave completely differently on the same die.

What to check before you buy

  • Is the frame stress-relieved after welding? If it is not, the geometry moves in service. Ask directly.

  • What is the guaranteed slide parallelism under load — not just at rest?

  • Is the clutch and brake pneumatic with a dual solenoid valve? This is a safety requirement, not a feature.

  • Who installs and commissions it, and is operator training included?

  • What is the warranty, and what does it exclude?

  • Can you see the machine running before dispatch?

What is a cross shaft power press used for? Blanking, piercing, forming, drawing and bending — particularly on wide dies and long parts where a standard gap-frame press would deflect. It suits progressive and transfer tooling in sustained production.

What is the difference between a cross shaft press and a C-frame press? The eccentric shaft runs across the machine width instead of front to back. That allows a wider bolster and better support for wide tooling. A C-frame gives better die access on three sides and suits smaller parts with frequent changeover.
