Forging Presses for Hand Tools: Spanners, Pliers, and Hammers

How a Drop-Forged Spanner Is Actually Made

Cut billet, heat to around 1150 to 1250 degrees Celsius, preform, closed-die forge on a screw press in one or two blows, trim flash, punch the ring end, heat treat, then grind and finish. The phrase drop-forged survives on packaging long after most factories replaced drop hammers with friction screw presses.

Why the Industry Switched

A screw press delivers repeatable energy per blow, so every spanner in a batch gets identical die fill and grain flow. With a hammer, blow energy depends partly on the operator. Grain flow following the tool's shape is the reason forged tools outlast cast ones.
