Power Presses in Bicycle Parts Manufacturing: From Sprockets to Crank Blanks

A bicycle is largely a stamped and forged product. Chainwheels and sprockets are blanked and pierced on power presses; brake components, mudguard stays, carriers, and stand parts are progressive-die stampings; bottom bracket shells, cotter pins, and crank blanks are hot-forged on screw presses; rims are pierced for spoke holes on presses.

The Economics of Cycle Parts

A mid-size bicycle plant might run 15 to 30 presses across 30 to 150 tonnes. Margins are thin, so die life and strokes per minute decide profitability more than almost any other factor — which makes press rigidity and clutch reliability commercial decisions, not just technical ones.
