How to Choose the Right Power Press: A Buyer's Guide From a Manufacturer

Buying the wrong press is an expensive lesson. After four decades of building presses in Ludhiana, this is the five-step method we wish every buyer used.

Step 1 — Calculate Tonnage

For blanking: perimeter multiplied by sheet thickness multiplied by shear strength, plus a 20–30% safety margin. For forging: size to the projected flash-line area multiplied by flow stress at forging temperature — not part weight.

Step 2 — Pick the Frame

Under 100 tonnes with hand feeding, a C-frame gives fast three-side access. Above 100 tonnes, tight tolerances, or deep drawing call for an H-frame. Wide progressive dies run best on a cross shaft press.

Step 3 — Cold or Hot Work

Cold sheet metal work belongs on a power press. Hot closed-die forging belongs on a friction or forging screw press. Never hot-forge on a machine built for stamping.

Step 4 — Clutch and Safety

Choose a pneumatic clutch for high-volume work, reliable single-stroke operation, and export-market safety compliance. Repeat strokes on worn mechanical clutches are the top cause of press-shop accidents.

Step 5 — Verify the Manufacturer
